6 Healthy Lifestyles to Work on Every Day

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

I know, I know—another blog post about healthy lifestyles. Well, healthy lifestyles are essential. They are part of what we want to promote at Conecta Health, and a little reminder is never too much.

First of all, keep in mind that when it comes to self-care, small daily habits can make a big difference in our overall well-being. Making lasting changes is not achieved overnight and requires practice, commitment, consistency, and determination. This is something that I have learned over time during my academic and professional journey together with my classmates, teachers, and especially my patients.

Taking care of yourself is crucial, but making time for self-care in our busy lives can be challenging. That's why I'm here to share some simple habits that you can practice every day to improve your overall health and well-being. Here are my top six healthy lifestyles to work on every day:

#1 - Start your day with gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful practice that can improve your mood and overall well-being. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things you're thankful for, whether it's something as simple as a warm cup of coffee in the morning or a kind gesture from a friend. This could be part of your daily routine of time management and organization.

As a clinical psychologist, I understand the importance of gratitude in cultivating a positive mindset. We all have struggled from time to time with negative thinking; practicing gratitude has helped me shift my perspective and focus on the positive things in my life. It has improved my overall outlook on life.

#2 - Drink enough water

Staying hydrated is essential for our physical and mental health. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily, and carry a reusable water bottle to make it easier. Staying hydrated throughout the day is essential, especially if you're active or live in a hot climate (such as our beautiful Puerto Rico). Drinking water helps to keep your body functioning properly, improves skin health, and helps with weight management.

I always try to carry a reusable water bottle wherever I go. It's a simple way to ensure I drink enough water throughout the day. Also, I have found that starting my day with a glass of water helps me start the day hydrated and energized.

#3 - Move your body

Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your physical and mental health. Find activities you enjoy, whether it's taking a dance class, going for a hike, or practicing yoga. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. The reality is that it can be less; keep your goals realistic and achievable. Important: keep moving!

I tell you, I am a couch potato and used to struggle with finding the motivation to exercise. It has helped me manage stress and improve my overall mood. Incorporating movement into my daily routine has improved my physical health and energy levels. As a mental health advocate with a holistic focus, I understand the benefits of exercise on mental health and overall well-being.

#4 - Practice mindful eating

Changing my eating habits has also helped me improve my energy levels and overall health. I have also seen how people around me have benefited from modifying their eating habits. Friends and patients who struggle with different health problems and conditions daily have shown me how small changes have made a big difference in their physical and mental health.

Fuel your body with foods that nourish and support your health. Aim for a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. For example, taking the time to eat mindfully helps improve digestion and overall enjoyment of food. Remember the mind-body connection and the importance of being present in the moment.

#5 - Prioritize rest

Take breaks:

It's essential to take regular breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. Whether taking a short walk outside, practicing deep breathing exercises or listening to music, find ways to take a break and reset your mind and body.

As someone who prioritized work over rest, I found that prioritizing rest has not only improved my sleep quality, but also my productivity and focus during the day. This helps maintain the healthy work-life balance that we all need.

Get enough sleep:

A good night's sleep is vital for our overall health and well-being. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue, decreased productivity, and increased stress. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night and establish a consistent sleep schedule and a relaxing bedtime routine to help you fall asleep faster.

A good example is practicing yoga or a mindful meditation before bed that helps you relax and get a good night's sleep. I recognize it is not easy (it is difficult for me), but try to get away from the phone or any electronic device before going to sleep and try to go to bed at the same time every day. Remember, the bed is for sleeping and intimate moments. Limit spending time in it during the day. Now, sweet dreams!

#6 - Don't forget to connect with others

While it's important to set healthy boundaries that allow us to fulfill our tasks and goals as part of our self-care strategies, social connections are crucial for our mental health and general well-being. Make time to connect with loved ones, whether meeting up for coffee, going for a walk together, or having a virtual chat.

Throughout my life, connecting with others has helped me feel supported and less alone during difficult times. Sometimes we could prioritize work over socializing, but interacting with others may improve our mental health and overall happiness. As a mental health professional, I understand the importance of social support and its impact on our lives.

Let taking care of yourself be a TOP priority.

As someone who has struggled with burnout and the adverse effects of neglecting self-care, I am passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and self-care practices. Incorporating healthy lifestyles can help you improve your physical and mental health, reduce stress, and boost your overall well-being. Daily healthy lifestyles can help you prioritize your self-care and lead to a happier, healthier life. Remember: self-care is not selfish; it's essential. Take care of yourself, and the rest will follow.

Don't forget to give yourself permission to rest and recharge when needed. It's okay to take a break and prioritize your own needs. I hope these tips have been helpful, and I look forward to hearing about your self-care journeys.
